CROUCHY - Rikki Clarke

February 17, 2021

21 seasons. 500 + wickets and 11,000 + runs. England caps and trophies galore. Of course the man we're talking to this week is the legendary Rikki Clarke.

The lads enjoy the company of one of the finest players to grace the County Championship in recent years - with a good natter about his career, his time with England... some of the greats in the Oval dressing room when he arrived all those years ago... and of course, his famed approach to sledging.

Recorded after England went 1-1 in the Test series against India in Chennai, the boys also take a look at that, plus Bumble chat and more!

February 11, 2021

A guest who lets be honest, doesn't need any introduction. A true legend of the game of cricket, and we're honoured that we managed to chat to the great man on The Shackles Are Off. Jack Brooks near passed out with excitement.

THAT over with Mike Atherton, THAT innings against Jack Russell and Athers in Joburg, his beginnings, his partnership with Pollock, coming back after apartheid, playing county cricket... we've got it all covered with Allan Donald.

Greggy, Brooksy and Chris all take a few moments to reflect on a stunning week for England in Chennai, too.

DAFFY - Phil DeFreitas

DAFFY - Phil DeFreitas

November 16, 2020

Cricket writer Colin Bateman once wrote that Phil 'Daffy' DeFreitas was an explosive hitter when the mood took him, an aggressive pace bowler, inclined to pitch everything short and a spectacular fielder....

What we here at The Shackles Are Off are telling you though, is that he's a lovely bloke with a few tales to tell! A cricket career that spanned 3 different decades and lasted 20 years, playing in World Cups, rooming with Sir Ian Botham... as well as arriving to the UK in the 70's with a rather different background to most... all makes for a fascinating listen on the latest episode.

OGGIE - Matthew Hoggard

August 14, 2020

Once full-time King of the Swingers, Matthew Hoggard has turned his hand to being a professional BBQ-er. Yeah, don't ask.

Hoggy covers everything from Matthew Hayden turning from being a bit, er, rude, to being a nice bloke, to taking a hat-trick in the Caribbean and OBVIOUSLY '05, calling Tony Blair a 'knob' and so many other belting stories.

Meanwhile our resident county superstar Brooksy has been on form for Somerset as we record this (with bat and ball!), yet Hoggy brings him down a peg or two!

After spending the best part of 17 years at his home county Yorkshire, Brezzy has decided to move to pastures new and up sticks to Warwickshire (this caused a bit of a problem for recording the pod, all is explained in the pod)!

Two Ashes urns, a T20 World Cup and two County Championships in a glittering career, the lads hear all about it in this fairly random podcast. Remember you can watch the video chat on Barmy Meets on our YouTube channel, and get your questions in for future guests by dropping us a line to or message Brooksy, Millard or Greggy a line on social media.

BAMBI - Alex Tudor

BAMBI - Alex Tudor

June 9, 2020

The great Alex Tudor took four-fer on his England debut Down Under... Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting and Glenn McGrath. It's a good job he's one of the nicest people in the game of cricket, because the injuries he suffered that curtailed his career after that could have driven anybody away from the game completely... but luckily for us, and you as a listener, he speaks so well and passionately about his times at Surrey with some absolute greats, facing Brett Lee, playing in front of the Barmy Army and much more.

We might just have to have him on again!

Keep your emails coming in... is the address for them!

ROY BOY - Jason Roy

ROY BOY - Jason Roy

June 4, 2020

When Martin Guptill nudged that ball towards him last July, he was the epitome of calm, with years of practice and a steel to succeed behind him... and the rest is history. But before that World Cup win Jason Roy had been on an upward curve which saw him become one of the most destructive white-ball batsmen in the world.

He joins the lads for a chat about everything from smashing the Aussies everywhere at the MCG to a dodgy pair of personalised trainers that earned him some stick off Trevor Bayliss.

Remember to get your correspondence in to the boys by emailing in to, or tweeting @jamesgregg7 @BrooksyFerrett @chrismillard18

With so much to cover, Jimmy talks about his early fielding prowess at Burnley CC, his hatred for Yorkshiremen, breaking into the England side and breaking a rib on THAT training camp in Germany before the 2010/11 Ashes series.

Steely fast bowler, Sexiest Sportsman in the World 2006 (fact - it's in the pod!), and Ashes '05 superstar Simon Jones joins the chaps for a chat about everything from his new job in London to Graham Thorpe costing him a prize scalp in his first Test Match.

Simon also offers some great insight into his recovery from injury, and the mental anguish that it caused him, as well as talking through THAT NOISE when he dismissed Michael Clarke in that amazing 2005 series.

DOUBLE TROUBLE - The Root Brothers

DOUBLE TROUBLE - The Root Brothers

May 13, 2020

It'd been over two years since we had England captain Joe Root on the pod, and his brother Glamorgan star Billy hadn't been on the pod at all until they both joined the lads for this special episode (although Billy was sat in the studio as his then-team-mate Luke Fletcher appeared a couple of years back, so he knew what he was letting himself in for!).

Imagine back-yard cricket, but then imagine it when two brothers are on opposite sides in a county match. Well, these two have done it... more on that in the podcast.

Greggy, Millard and Somerset-seamer Jack Brooks ask Joe about the World Cup final, The Ashes, his first away trip (and the wardrobe malfunction that came with it), nearly taking his first Test 5-fer back in January and his bat-drop celebration that he stole off former team-mate Brooksy.

Billy joins the fun to talk about his useful advice* for his brother on his Glamorgan team-mate Marnus Labaschagne for the Ashes, bagging an Aston Martin deal due to his own batting heroics last year, and he gives us a masterclass in Welsh.

May 5, 2020

Four test matches into what will surely be a long England career, Zak 'Creepy' Crawley joins The Shackles Are Off for a long natter. He talks about playing golf (good player) with fellow Kent man Rob Key (dubious player), scoring runs on his (quite literal home ground) favourite Canterbury patch, and what THAT catch was like to snaffle in Cape Town earlier this year.

Plus it also has to be said, he gives the lads one of the very biggest laughs of the whole podcast series to date with a wonderful anecdote from the Caribbean. Lovely stuff.

MYTHBUSTING - Jack Russell

MYTHBUSTING - Jack Russell

April 27, 2020

Robert Charles 'Jack' Russell had an innate ability to let the ball melt into his gloves as a wicket-keeper, and now he has an astonishing ability to paint what he sees with a paintbrush.

But as you'll find out in this podcast, the enigmatic and legendary gentlemanly character that is Jack Russell specialises in telling us stories and recounting some of his fondest moments from being a player. He talks about what pre-season used to be like, Joburg with Athers, and does a bit of mythbusting (or confirming some!!) as chats to Millard, Brooksy and Greggy.

Remember to download, subscribe and review as you so please!

From four different locations, Brooksy, Chris and Greggy speak to Somerset and England's spin sensation Dom Bess.

Brooksy is a tenant of Bessy's Taunton pad (albeit in the 'weird' zone upstairs) so we get a good picture of what it's like to co-habit with the pair of them, plus Bessy talks us through his rise-and-rise to being a Test spinner.... aided by the help of his new best mates Ashwin and Herath.

There's also the battle for the next first-class hundred on the cards, as well as talking about what it was like to experience that Cape Town Test and milking it with the Barmy Army in full voice.

Remember on the last podcast where there was talk about jetting off to Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi? Well, unfortunately, neither of those things happened due to the worsening of the dreadful coronavirus. With bigger issues at hand, but with far less to be occupying themselves with, Jack Brooks, Chris Millard and 'key worker' James Gregg dial in to have the first of a series of chats from afar in self-isolation.

Chris and Greggy forensically explore Brooksy's boxing technique as seen on Instagram, whilst he also reveals some cool and commendable ideas from he and his Somerset team-mate to help the NHS.

But other than that... they're talking nonsense.... after the technology works!

He also has some choice words for one of the hosts on how old they look.....
